Take Five and Meet Author Kim McMahill

I'm so pleased to bring you Kim McMahill, who writes  stories of adventure, survival and love. The kind I love to read and write. And I'm going to guest on her blog in August.  Be sure to stay tuned and I'll give you the date as soon as I know.

Welcome back to An Indie Adventure, Kim.  Tell us, what inspired you to write your book, A Dose of Danger?

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve begun paying more attention to what I eat and my overall health. The more I read about nutrition and fitness the more confused I become, especially when it comes to supplements. There are a myriad of products out there that make all sorts of claims, but what’s true? I’m sure the answer is very complex because there are a lot of variables that influence a product's effectiveness, which makes the subject an excellent topic for fiction. Add that to my mild paranoia that forces are always working behind the scenes to influence our choices and manipulate markets, and I had plenty to work with.

How do you use setting to further your story?

To up the suspense and tension I always use a combination of remote locations and/or the unyielding forces of Mother Nature to diminish the hero and heroine’s chances of survival, so the setting is crucial. In A Dose of Danger, not only does much of the story unfold at a remote ranch in Wyoming with spotty cell phone coverage, the story takes place during a particularly bad winter. If being hunted by a professional assassin isn’t enough, add marginal communications, no help for miles, and unforgiving weather, and the characters will be pushed to their physical and emotional limits.

How do you construct your characters?

I create character profiles for each of the main characters. Usually I already have a pretty good idea in my mind what these characters are like when I start jotting down physical attributes and character traits. Occasionally, I have gone as far as writing a backstory to help me really nail down what makes the character tick and why she makes the decisions she does.

How is your main character completely different than you?

The most obvious is that she is a brilliant researcher. After my first semester of college physics I changed my major.  And, physically, we have nothing in common.

Tell us something about yourself we might not expect!

It takes very little to make me cry, which is probably why I read and write what I do.  When I hear that a movie or book is a “feel good” story, I avoid it since that’s generally code for “it will make you cry.”

Give us a brief summary of A Dose of Danger:
When researcher Grace Talbot and her team discover a possible solution for weight loss they become targets of a group dedicated to controlling the multi-billion dollar a year diet-product industry. Her unsanctioned testing methods bring tragedy to the family ranch, and the attention of the local sheriff’s deputy. With her colleagues either dead, missing, or on the run she soon realizes she must trust the deputy with her life, but can she trust him with her heart?

Take Five With Author Laurel O'Donnell

Welcome to An Indie Adventure, Laurel.  Tell us, what inspired you to write your book Angel's Assassin?

Thank you so much for having me as a guest, Leslie!  I'm honored to be here.

I started with Damien, the hero.  He is sort of an anti-hero because he is an assassin.  I usually start with characters for all of my stories and he is one of the strongest characters I have ever written.  He feels that there is no redemption for him, because of the acts he has committed.

As I grew to know him better, I knew the heroine had to be someone who was bright to his dark, someone who could save him.  And that was a big task!
So, I guess the answer to your question as to what inspired me to write Angel's Assassin was the need to save Damien.

What were your experiences as a child that contributed to you becoming a writer?

I started writing when was in junior high school.  I remember going to family parties and always having a pen and notebook.  Falling in love and the power of love have always intrigued me.  Even when I was young, I would write myself as a character in a television show like Starsky and Hutch.  From there, it was a natural progression to create my own characters.

It wasn't until college that I began to take writing classes and to hone my skills.
Writing can be very therapeutic and I think the reason I started writing was because my mother and father were getting a divorce.  If you look at my writing, most of my characters have only one parent.

Do day-to-day life experiences influence your stories?

Absolutely.  It is also about where I am in my life.  For instance, when I was writing Champion of the Heart, I was raising my own children.  The story centers around a heroine that cares for a group of orphans.  I used some of my own experiences to make the orphans come to life.

If I were to go back and try to write my first novel, The Angel and The Prince, it wouldn't come out the same way.  My writing incorporates experiences and feelings that I have at the time I am writing it.

What is the first thing you do when you begin a new book?

It's different for each book.  Sometimes I delve into characters and try to get to know them.  Sometimes it is based on history and a lot of research is required.

If you were a TV, film or book character, apart from one you've created, who would you be?  And why?

Who would I like to be?  Or who am I?  I am Frankie in the Middle.  That is who I am, except that I write.  She watches television at night, but I write.  Who would I like to be?  Daenerys in Game of Thrones, simply to have a pet dragon.  I think that would be really cool.

Give us a brief summary of Angel's Assassin:

Damien is an assassin, a man with no home and a tortured past.  Sold into slavery as a young boy, he is trained to kill with cold calculation, without remorse.  As a reward for his ruthless success, he is given a chance to earn his freedom from his cruel master.  One last mission.  One final person to slay…

Lady Aurora of Acquitaine is the epitome of purity and goodness, beloved by all her people.  She lives her life trying to atone for her mother’s cruelty by being a fair and just ruler.  Secretly she fears that one day her mother’s murderer will return for her.
When Damien enters Aurora’s life, tempting her with promises of dark passion and forbidden lust, he threatens to tear her peaceful world apart with shadowy secrets of his own.

Can Aurora’s light heal Damien’s dark spirit or will his evil consume her?  The eternal battle of good versus evil, love versus hate, dark versus light, all come to a shattering climax in this historical romance set in medieval England.

O’Donnell lives in Illinois with her four cherished children, her beloved husband and her five cats. She finds precious time every day to escape into the medieval world and bring her characters to life in her writing.

Author Spotlight with Kim Cox

Book Two in the Lana Malloy Paranormal Mystery series, Get Out or Die,
was released July 1, 2015, by Kim Cox

Blurb: In this book Lana deals with new abilities and an angry ghost who does not want to leave and blames the family living in the house for his death. He wants them out. Here’s the Get Out or Die blurb:
Since the news of her first case, Lana Malloy’s Private Investigating/Mediator business is booming. At one pro-bono job, Lana helps a widow communicate with her late husband and learns of a frightening new ability she wasn’t aware she possessed, an ability that could give the spirit the upper hand if she’s not careful.

Lana struggles for control when she encounters the angry ghost who doesn’t want to leave and who doesn’t want the occupants of the house to stay. Will Lana be able to control the situation or will the ghost sense he can overtake her? Does she have other abilities she can rely on to save her?

Excerpt:
“I can’t believe your husband is angry with you,” Lana Malloy said to her new client, Angelina Fuentes. “After all, he died almost a year ago and hasn’t haunted you until now. He hasn’t assaulted you or anything like that, has he?”
“No, Senorita. My Mario only moves things to where I can’t find them. He wants me to lose my mind or something?” A tear trailed down her cheek. “Why does he do this?”
Angelina was an exotic beauty with long black hair and eyes almost as dark. A young woman who’d lost her husband way too young.
Lana closed the space between them, holding Angelina’s hands between her own as she sat beside her on the flowered sofa. Angelina’s lavender scent permeated the air around them. “That’s not Mario’s intentions at all.” She closed her eyes to concentrate. “He came back to try to help you. To let you know it’s okay to live your life, and maybe one day to marry and be happy again. Little Mario needs a male influence in his life too.”
“Why does he say this? Does he not love me?”
“It’s because he does love you that he wants you to have a happy life. Even when that life must be without him.”
Angelina broke down. “I can’t. Mario was . . . is my everything.” Her shoulders shook as she sobbed loudly. Lana would never get used to the emotional strain of dealing with broken hearts.
“What about Rodriquez?”
At the sound of Mario’s voice, Angelina’s head shot up. She searched the room before bringing her gaze back to Lana.
“Where did that come from?”
Lana knew what was happening, but was incapable of stopping it. This was a first for her. Never had one of the spirits sent his voice through her.
“From me.” Lana felt her lips move beyond her control, but the voice wasn’t hers. She was a bit leery of this situation. One thing was for sure, Mario planned to get his point across. At first, she’d been stunned by the change, but then struggled to get control. Frustration overcame her and she tried as hard as she could to dispel the presence manipulating her.
Wrinkles appeared around Angelina’s eyes and she squinted as she stared at Lana. She snatched her hands from Lana’s, jumped out of her seat, clutched her rosary in her hands, crossed herself and backed away, praying silently.
“Don’t be afraid, it is only me, your beloved husband. I won’t harm you.”
“Is it really you, Mario? What do you mean? Rodriguez knows we can only be friends.”
“Why?”
“Because he’s your best friend and I love you. I always will.”
“Rodriguez has loved you for a long time, even before I did.”
“I swear, Rodriquez, we…I…never did anything to shame our marriage.”
“My poor Angelina, I know that. This is not what I mean. He is a true friend and you, a loving and loyal wife. But I’m dead now. Both of you should move on. He loves you. Let him make you happy.”
Lana’s heart went out to Angelina. As she smoothed her dark tresses with the tips of her fingers, her big brown eyes reflected the struggle going on in her heart.
Lana continued to struggle against Mario’s intrusion. This couldn’t be happening to her. She cared for Angelina and Mario but this was a violation of her body.
“Now, I must return to where I belong,” Mario continued. “Promise me you’ll at least try to move on, to live a good life.”
As Lana kept concentrating, she could feel the spirit start to leave and wasn’t sure if she was driving him out, or if he was leaving of his own accord. Just when she thought she’d rid herself of the unwanted spirit, it latched onto her again.
“I will.” Angelina dotted the tears from under her eyes with the pink tissue she’d held in her lap. “I will try. I promise.”

Take Five and Meet Author Carol Malone

Welcome to An Indie Adventure, Carol.  Tell us, what inspired you to write your book Summer Holiday?

This was a personal story to write, though not about me at all. I had actually had a summer crush on my grandma’s neighbor across the street where this novel takes place, and acted like a silly fourteen-year-old girl I was at the time. I wanted to re-create that special time, that singular summer love. I took my fictional characters and placed them in my beloved valley, in my grandma’s house, and in the town that I adored.

I wanted Lizzy Golden, my heroine, to be bold where I was not, and Brent Pierce, my hero to just be the Brent that I had loved. I’d been kicking around the idea of writing a historical set in territorial Utah for a while so when the Sweet / Clean Facebook group that I found said let’s write a summer themed compilation where a beach is mentioned, all I had to do was add in a lake that, technically, wouldn’t be completed for many years.

But it made for great fun for the town folk to look forward to an end of summer picnic at the lake.

Have you been a lifelong reader of historical romance?  What are some the first books you remember reading?

Anne of Green Gables was my first historical romance. You might not think Anne is a love story, but underneath all her shenanigans, she was a romantic at heart. Gilbert was my first virtual love. I followed that up with Little House on the Prairie. I can’t think of a stronger hero that Almonzo. Innocent, pure, and captivating love stories. I was hooked on romance after reading those books and have been a huge romance fan since then.

What do you do to rev your creative juices?

Lately, I’ve been suffering a real emptying of the creative juice bucket. It took a challenge—the summer compilation and a deadline—April 25th, to motivate me to push through down times. I find I’m better at having a window of opportunity to write and a deadline to shoot for to motivate me. I seem to write better in the early hours of the morning and … for some strange reason, get an extra kick of energy around 10 pm. Go figure?

What would be your advice to people who are considering a writing career?

Write, write, write, and write some more. Then find a good book coach, one that will be the perfect fit for you. It wouldn’t hurt that this person might have some psychological training as well as book-writing power behind them.

Not to sound like an ad or anything, but I saw an ad on the side of a blog article about evaluating my passion for writing and found Beth Barany, a book coach who was trained in NLP-Neuro Linguistic http://bethbarany.com/ (look it up). Another one of the absolutely best things new writers can do is read. Read in your genre, read out of your genre, but read. I personally read over 100+ books a year.

You’re having a dinner party. What character from your novel do you hope doesn’t show up? Why?

Catrina Boatwright. Cat, as she’s called in the story, is a self-absorbed, social-climbing young lady who assumes the male lead, Brent, is already hers and plots to ruin and embarrass Lizzy by tampering with her box lunch. She’s petty and selfish, and a dirty fighter. **shudders** There’s no way I could enjoy a dinner party with Cat without trying to murder her.

Give us a brief summary of Summer Holiday (part of Summer Hearts Compilation):

For Summer Hearts (the compilation): Every Summer Has a Love Story...Six Summer Tales of Sweet Romance that bring you the very best in Historical, Contemporary and Fantasy Romance. Sarah Daley, Carol Malone, Kathy Bosman, Debby Lee, Robyn Echols, and Lisa Watson weave stories of long days, sultry nights, sun-kissed beaches and sweet romance.

For Summer Holiday, my novella: In the summer of 1905, Lizzy Gordon’s father dismisses her desire to be a doctor, demanding she become a teacher—a profession which does not allow women to marry. Determined to be free to choose her destiny, Lizzy defies her father and falls for her grandma's handsome neighbor—literally.

Teacher Brent Pierce is dedicated to expanding young minds, but circumstances are forcing him to take over the family farm. Sweet complications are what he gets when the feisty Lizzy drops into his arms.

Before the summer is over Lizzy and Brent will be forced to make tough decisions. Can they find the courage to each fight for their independence, their dreams, and still be together?

Bio: Award-winning author Carol Malone has successfully combined her three passions – romance, sports, and writing in her two highly-rated books, Fight Card Romance: Ladies Night and Ladies Night Christmas sequel.

She was the first woman to write a romance for the all-male dominated genre. Carol writes romantic suspense to rocket her readers into the shady world of who-done-it to uncover a surprising happily-ever-after. If not hammering out new tales, Carol’s loves reading, sports, and hanging with her sci-fi author husband on the coast of California.

Author Spotlight with Jacquie Biggar

New Release by Jacquie Biggar, Twilight's Encore

Jacquie: "I’ve always had a fascination with old theatres. In my hometown the same theatre has enticed adults and children alike for fifty plus years. And while it too has undergone extensive renovations such as the one in Twilight’s Encore, the charm remains the same.

My goal for this book was to bring some of that ambiance into the storyline and add a twist of suspense with a narcissistic villain and a young love gone wrong."

Excerpt:
“I hope the room was all right,” he said, not sure what to do with his hands now they were empty.

She nodded and moved to straighten the covers on the bed. The sway of her hips beneath his robe almost unmanned him. Hypnotized by her hands as they plumped up the pillow and traced the hem of the sheet with delicate fingers, Ty swallowed hard and swore under his breath.

“Pardon me?” She turned and caught him staring. His arousal was plain to see, and her eyes on him only made it worse.

“I asked if you’re hungry, it’s almost dinner time.” As soon as the words left his mouth he knew it was the wrong thing to say. Impossible not to think of the last time she’d been in this house for a meal and ended up as his dessert.

Invisible strings drew him across the room until he stood in her space, close enough to notice her agitated breathing and smell the musky scent of her desire.

“Ty…” she pleaded, her hands raised to push him away, or pull him closer, he wasn’t sure. And the moment she made contact it didn’t matter anymore. He gave in. Gave up.

“It’s too late,” he murmured as his arms drew her in. “I can’t deny what’s happening between us any longer. I need you. And you need me.” His lips hovered ever closer, drawn to the heaven he knew awaited him within her embrace.

“God Katy, please say yes.”

The Blurb:
One man's betrayal will seal another's fate.

Ty Garrett fell in love with Katy Fowler from the moment they'd met. When her father’s betrayal yank the young couple apart, Ty becomes bitter.

After a decade away, Katy returns to Tidal Falls with plans to get married in her family's theatre. But she hadn't expected to run into Ty Garrett, the boy she'd never forgotten.

When unseen forces endanger  their lives, can Ty save Katy and win back her love, or is it too late for these two star-crossed lovers?

Bio:
From the time Jacquie was twelve years old, she knew she wanted to be a writer. That year she wrote a short story called Count Daffodil after spending countless hours searching for ideas. The story garnered Jacquie an A and was read aloud through the school's loudspeaker system. Needless to say, after that she was hooked.

Jacquie grew up, got married, raised a family and left her writing urges to simmer in the background unattended.

She owned and operated a successful diner in her hometown for a number of wonderful years before deciding to live her dream of becoming an author.

Jacquie's first book, Tidal Falls, a romantic suspense novel about second chances, released September of 2014.

Take Five with Author Iris Blobel

Welcome to An Indie Adventure, Iris.  Tell us, what inspired you to write your book, I Think I Love You?

Hi, L.A., thank you for having me as your guest today! I Think I Love You is the 3rd book in the Australian Sports Stars series. We went on holidays to a small coastal town in New South Wales a few years ago and I wanted to use it as a setting for my next book. We had the finals in the “Australian Football League” … the rest is history. Book one Love Will Find You with Tyson as the main character was born. But while writing it, I fell in love with his friends Oliver, Markus, and Sarah, and they all got a book as well. Oliver is a baseball player, and Markus (with Germany winning the World Cup last year) had to be a soccer player :)

Have you been a lifelong reader of romance?  What are some the first books you remember reading?

No, I was never a big reader. I struggled through every assignment at school, which involved reading. Yet, once I settled in life, I was able to settle with a book as well. But I read across the genres nowadays, from crime to mystery and romance. If it’s well written, I read it.

What do you do to rev your creative juices?

I’d love to say: I go on holidays. But to start a book, that’s it. I get most of my ideas or at least the best ideas from holidays. Apart from that, I only write when I feel like it, not for the amount of words that need to be written a day.

What would be your advice to people who are considering a writing career?

Never give up and when others tell you to learn about the craft … sit down and learn about it. There’s some truth to it. There are too many books out there which have a great story, but lack proper editing and formatting, and thus aren’t as good as they could be (including one of mine :) )

You’re having a dinner party.  What character from your novel do you hope doesn’t show up?  Why?

Anita! What a b**ch. She’s Tyson’s ex in Love Will Find You and has quite an attitude. Yes, please keep her away from me!

Give us a brief summary of I Think I Love You:

Markus DeLeon and Sarah Winter’s lives couldn’t be more different…
After three years away as the goalkeeper for an English soccer club, Markus has been happy to be back in Australia. He’d missed his family and friends, including Sarah. He’s known her since childhood and often protected her from the teasing of other children and the troubling consequences of a broken home.

When they attend their friends’ wedding, a new light is cast on their friendship…
Sarah is fresh out of a bad relationship, and Markus has always been the one she can confide in. Maybe it’s the magic of the wedding—or how stunning he looks in a tux—but the attraction between them intensifies in ways they’d never imagined.

But sometimes when risking what you have, you might lose everything…
Following a passionate encounter, Markus isn’t sure how to handle this new aspect of his relationship with Sarah and literally flees the scene for the coast. Sarah is unsure how to react to his sudden departure but is soon knocked off course by misunderstandings and a frightening family emergency.

Markus realises his mistake and wants to make things right, but he also faces obstacles. He’s been offered an exciting new job, and an attractive newcomer to the neighbourhood is eager to claim his attention though the last thing Markus needs is another confusing relationship.

Can Sarah and Markus face the fear and doubt—and the potential loss of their lifelong friendship—to give their love a chance?

Five Secrets from Author G. Elizabeth Kretchmer

Today we learn Five Secrets From G. Elizabeth Kretchmer. Read on to find out what she thinks about Mother's Day and her heroine.  I think you'll find as interesting as I do. And now I really want to read her book.

G. Elizabeth Kretchmer holds an MFA in Writing from Pacific University. Her debut novel, The Damnable Legacy of A Minister’s Wife, was independently published in 2014 and will be republished by Booktrope in 2015 under a shortened title, The Damnable Legacy. Her short stories, essays, and freelance work have appeared in The New York Times, High Desert Journal, Silk Road Review, SLAB, and other publications.

She grew up in Chicago but has lived up and down the west coast for the last three decades and now lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and Labradoodle. When she’s not writing, she’s coming up with elaborate reasons to see her three grown sons or facilitating therapeutic and wellness writing workshops. For more information, visit her website and blog at www.gekretchmer.com.

Hi G. Elizabeth, please tell us Five Secrets we may not know about The Damnable Legacy of A Minister’s Wife or you, but will after today!

1) My first secret is that my first name is Gail, which means “my father rejoices” and was a popular name for a very short period of time in the mid-20th century. I don’t use this as my author name because I don’t want readers to do some math, guess my age, and make assumptions about the book because of their calculations. I want them to read the book first, fall in love with the characters and the story, and then try to figure out how old I really am if it really matters, although once they’ve read the book I don’t think it will.

2) I don’t like Mother’s Day even though I had a wonderful mom and I have three sons. So I chose Mother’s Day weekend as a good time to travel by myself to interior Alaska to do some field research for this novel. Of course, it was also during peak climbing season, which is another reason I went then.

3) I had a hard time learning to like Lynn, my protagonist. How awful does that sound? She has certain attributes that I admire (she’s athletic and in great shape), and she has a heart (evidenced by the way she still regrets having placed her daughter for adoption 30 years ago), and she’s extremely talented in her field of passion (mountain climbing). But she’s a flawed individual, and some of those flaws are off-putting, which is why I didn’t like her.

Eventually, after working on her story (and multiple drafts of the manuscript) for years, I learned to understand her more deeply, and to have compassion for the mistakes she made and for her desire to grow, and now, while I don’t think we’d ever be BFFs, I’d love to at least invite her over for dinner. And I do wish the best for her fictional future.

4) When I wrote the first draft of this novel, Frankie was biracial, and that stemmed from my youth when I went to an integrated elementary school on the south side of Chicago. But over the course of developing the story and the characters, I decided to change her ancestry. One time in history that has always fascinated me is the Iranian Revolution, which was when Frankie’s mother would have been conceived, so, as one thing led to another, Frankie turned out to be 25% Iranian and 25% American. You’ll have to read my short story collection, coming out later in 2015, to find out the rest of her heritage.

5) I’m planning to climb Denali in my next life. I’m also planning to be a neuroscientist and a great singer.

Blurb
:
The Damnable Legacy of A Minister’s Wife: A Novel
(soon to republished by Booktrope as The Damnable Legacy: A Novel)

Lynn Van Swol still regrets the decision she made thirty years ago to place her daughter for adoption so she could climb the highest mountains of the world. Frankie Rizzoni is the troubled biological granddaughter that Lynn has never known. And Beth Mahoney, a minister’s wife with terminal cancer, is the only one who has discovered the relationship between the two.

Worried about Frankie’s future, she designed a plan upon her deathbed to bring them together, but now, narrating from the afterlife, she must helplessly watch as her legacy threatens to unravel.

The Damnable Legacy of A Minister’s Wife is literary women’s fiction at its finest, embracing the universal need for love and survival, exploring the importance of attachment, place, and faith, and asking how far we should go to achieve our goals–and at what cost.
